Facebook Local
the new events application.

After releasing its not-so-successful Facebook Events app, Facebook is back with a new version: Facebook Local for events.
As its previous name indicated, Facebook Events was an app devoted entirely to events. However, it wasn’t as successful as expected due to a lack of enthusiasm partly because of high competition in this market. Certain apps such as Foursquare or Yelp, which give users recommendations on places to go out, where to eat, sights to see and nearby events, already have a strong foothold.
Facebook has now come back with an answer through its new Facebook Local. The application features similar functionalities as its competitors to help users find events and venues.
However, Facebook hopes to set itself apart through its core activity. It is the largest social media platform with more than 1.3 billion users per day. It plans to harness this social interaction to develop Local.
By using your network and their activities, the app can tell you that “Mary” liked such-and-such pizza joint and that she recommends eating there, or you might see that “John” is also going to the local arena for a concert tomorrow night.
These functionalities are already available on Facebook to some extent but they will have a dedicated space to spread the word to more people. Users will also be able to use the app to create their own private events.
It’s a new approach that will be interesting for professionals who can expect to reach more internet users and make a stronger impact. Knowing that friends and acquaintances have already been to a venue may reassure or motivate others to go as well. For public events, access to information will be simplified and personalized.
The Local app may become even more useful than Facebook. With more than 550 million users every month in North America, we can’t wait to see it come to Europe.
